How does RE support our curriculum intent and Christian Vision?

Good learning promotes religious literacy so that pupils develop systematic and powerful knowledge. In doing so, they can develop their own truth and understanding and identity. Teaching RE well helps children to ask and answer challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human. With these skills and this knoweldge RE has an enormous and fundamental place to help children participate fully and positively in society with its diverse religions and worldviews. This is our ambition for all our children. As a Church of England School RE is a core subject and we treat it as an academic subject in its own right. 

 

How do we structure our RE teaching?

We are currently in a period of transition  where we are stopping using the current Hull and East Riding Agreed Syllabus for RE. From January 2021 we will be using the new Agreed Syllabus. This is because  we believe in using a multi disciplinary approach to teaching RE, the complimentary disciplines of theology, philosophy and social sciences.

Our curriculum focuses primarily on Christianity but we also the principal key faiths of Islam and Sanatana Dharma (Hinduism) We are currently deciding on how to allocate the units across the Key Stages and we will also will shortly make a decision about which other principal faith and worldview we will study under the new Agreed Syllabus. The units of the new syllabus are further down the page. 

RE in the Early Years

Religious Education in Early Years should allow exploration of the world and respond to children’s natural curiosity about things around them. Our RE curriculum matches coverage of the Prime Areas in the EYFS. It is better to slim down and cover less content in greater depth. We focus primarily on Christianity but study other faiths as part of the topic approach for example Diwali as a festival of light.
