Reading- the key to success
Reading is a fundamental skill. Without the ability to read to an age appropriate level and fluency, children will be incapable of accessing the rest of the curriculum. With this in mind we give a lot of time to the teaching of phonics and early reading.
Guided reading takes place on a regular basis, where the teacher takes a small group of children with a appropriate level of book. From this they teach the skills of basic reading but also of comprehension and prediction.
Independent reading is important too and we ask parents to hear children read at home on a daily basis. We still invest time in one to one reading with an adult in school when appropriate. We have regular reading stars, trained adults who give up their time to volunteer and hear children read.
With the support of FOBS, our parents group, we have invested in good quality books for the children to enjoy. These reading treasure chests contain the best of popular children's fiction for everyone to enjoy. We want to develop that reading habit and hope the children understand the joy of reading for pleasure.
