How does science support our curriculum intent and Christian vision? 

Science is a body of knowledge built up through the experimental testing of ideas. Science is also methodology, a practical way of finding reliable answers to questions we may ask about the world around us. Science in our school is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation, as well as using and applying process skills. Science is also a collaborative activity where ideas and suggestions are shared and investigated together. Through practical activities and team work, children experience and learn how to work together have mutual respect for one another and value social cohesion. Children naturally ask questions such as why? and how? Through studying science they not only understand more about their world but can begin to influence what happens to their world and act as agents of change.

How do we structure our science teaching?

We teach science both as part of topics and as a standalone subject. We carefully structure our topics so that children not only become better experimental scientific researcher but that through that investigation they build upon key concepts so they know more and remember more. This is fundamental in our mixed aged classes.

Young children are naturally curious and we recognise that all science learning starts through play and discovery in our nursery. 

The wider curriculum in science

At Bishop Wilton, science is never just an indoor experience. Our science curriculum is enriched and extended through regular visits and our partnerships with the local community. So the children get out and about the in village and explore the wonderful countryside, they work with Garrowby estate. Our recent residential experience at Beswick brought the children up close to the great outdoors as they learnt new skills.
