"Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity."

The PE curriculum

How does PE support  our curriculum intent and Christian Vision?

PE is central to our curriculum and is key in building children's confidence, resilience and self esteem whilst improving physical well being and overall health. We know that whilst there is a body of knowledge and skills to develop through our PE curriculum we believe that physical activitiy enhances a pupil's ability to think, focus and concentrate. It develops fundamental decision making, team work skills and develops resilence and determination to succeed.

How do we structure the curriculum in PE?

We use the expertise of our sports coach to support the professional development of our teachers and inspire the children. Although the school grounds are too small for most PE sessions we can use the playground and astroturf area for some activities. We have a strong partnership with the village hall and twice a week the whole school is able to make use of both the indoor and fantastic outdoor facilities there. Only a short walk away from the main school,  it means the children can take part in the full range of national curricuum subjects. The children swim as part of the Local Authority swimming programme in the summer term at the pool in the nearby town of Pocklington. We also use a number of specialist coaches to enhance the PE curriculum for example in dance.

PE in the Early Years

Every day our children get the chance to develop both their gross and fine motor inside and outside.

Even our youngest children have the chance to get active at the village hall and this is built into their offer for physical development.

The Wider Curriculum in PE

There are so many fantastic walks in the area and with so much space around the village we often get the children out and exploring and making use of the great outdoors. Competitive sport is just as important to us and we exploit our federated status so that all children get a chance to take part in interschool sporting events. Although there would be too few children to form an individual school team, as a federation, the children have taken part in football, hockey tournaments and orienteering challenges.  They have run in cross country events and biathlons and even a bowling competition. As part of the Driffield Sport Partnership children get the chance to compete in a wide variety of different competitions and this can lead to higher level regional competitions.
