"Mathematics is not about number, equations, computations or algorithms: it is about UNDERSTANDING."

The Maths Curriculum
How does maths support our curriculum intent and Christian vision
Maths is everywhere and all children need to have fluency and competence in the four rules of number. If children are going to be agents of change in their own lives they have to be well equipped with those basic skills. However, maths is about thinking deeply, problem solving and making links and that is fundamental to achieving highly. So our maths curriculum helps children think logically and articulate their thinking thus building their confidence to know more, do more and remember more.
How do we structure our maths teaching?
We use the mastery maths approach and follow the Maths No Problem scheme across the school. This uses the concrete, pictorial and then abstract approach. This is fundamental to a sucessful maths mastery. The teaching programme is detailed and structured and delivered to each year group as a whole and this is detailed in the section below.
Maths in the Early Years
We want all children to get off to a flying start in maths and we beleive that is all about building confidence and that inspring that can do feeling. We underpin our early years curriculum in number and counting using the number blocks approach. We use high quality resources and first hand experiences to make sure children have the strongest foundations. Using both inside and outside we make sure that the children grasp the basics they need to move on.
The Wider Maths Curriculum
The cross curricular approach of our curriculum means that maths activities are embedded into other subjects as a matter of course. Children have many opportunities to develop their maths skills in many other subjects such as science, DT, geography and even PE. We also make sure that children get the chance to use their skills by taking part in external events such as the maths challenge at Woldgate school and make £5 blossom. Children get the chance to understand concepts such as money through fundraising events and even budgeting as they buy Christmas presents for their families at the Christmas surprise fair.
