How does history support our curriculum intent and Christian Vision?

Learning about the past helps children better understand the world they live in now. It teaches children to see things from different perspectives and understand why people behaved in particular ways. Our curriculum helps children to develop the knowledge and skills to understand how they can be agents of change now by understanding what has gone before. 

How do we structure the curriculum in history?

We plan and deliver our history in blocks of curriculum time. We have worked hard to produce a skills progression in history that indicates where and how the children will learn particular skills. We are now working to replicate this by ensuring there is a clear progression in knowledge. It is vital for us that we focus very clearly on the substantive knowledge and the disciplnary knoweldge of history since we cannot teach the units in KS2 in chronological order. For this reason we also recognise that it is important to reinforce knowledge in history by exploiting opportunities to revisit and reinforce previous learning as and when the oportunities arise in other topics. 

History in the Early Years

We recognise the foundation of history concepts from the Early Years Curriculum. Children need to develop a strong sense first of all of today, yesterday and the passing of time before they can begin to think of events that happened a long time ago. All of the learning that happens in foundation stage is essential to all future learning in history.
